Resident Evil 2 Remake still has some redeeming qualities for me, but it's much harder to find positives in Resident Evil 3 Remake. While the western pandering is less prominent than in Resident Evil 2 Remake, the overall scale of the game is much smaller—even when compared to the original PlayStation-era version!
Disappointing Scale
I was excited to explore Raccoon City, but the game turned out to have a tiny map, with most of the gameplay feeling like a corridor simulator! Playing blind, I finished it in just 4 hours — far shorter than the original Resident Evil 3, which took around 12 hours!
To make matters worse, several key locations from the original were completely removed, particularly the park and clock tower. I wonder why Capcom cut them entirely instead of expanding these locations. It made the game feel like a TLDR version of the original.
Missing Enemy
The Grave Digger is absent. I played cautiously, anticipating its appearance, only to realise it wasn’t in the game at all. In fact, its entire "stage" was removed. As aggravating as it was, this pales in comparison to Capcom's treatment of Nemesis.
Nemesis was one of the scariest parts of the original game, constantly following you and making every encounter feel intense. However, in the remake, he feels heavily scripted, appearing only at specific moments rather than as the terrifying, unpredictable stalker he once was. His encounters are mostly flashy (and scripted!) boss fights instead of true survival battles.
To be fair, the original also had him appear in predetermined spots, but at least his appearances had some randomness, keeping players on edge.
The Scapegoat
Instead of including Mercenaries mode or other extra content, Resident Evil 3 Remake was bundled with Resident Evil Resistance, an online multiplayer game that wasn't well received. Rumours suggest Capcom rushed the Remake to push players toward Resistance, which was packed with microtransactions.
Back to the Original
The only real positive I got from playing Resident Evil 3 Remake? It made me want to go back and replay the original Resident Evil 3—which was bigger, tenser, and longer! Oh yeah... 😏
Summary
Pros
Makes me want to play original Resident Evil 3 ||
Cons
- Very small scale made the game felt unfinished and cash-grabby.
- Expensive for it's length.
- Swearing instead of witty dialogue.
- Skort instead of miniskirt.
