Dynasty Warriors 3 is the third mainline Dynasty Warriors game while being the second with the 1 vs 100 formula, unlike Dynasty Warriors 2 there is a lot unlock this time around.

Two words of warning before beginning

• First if you used Cheat Codes with the this game your save cannot be transferred to [[[guide:dynasty-warriors-3-xtreme-legends | Xtreme Legends]]] due to anti cheating measures.
• Second if you have Xtreme Legends and are wondering when should you transfer/mixjoy with the vanilla game do so as early as possible, due to the item Musou Armor requirement rank points will get reset back to 0 if you transfer your save. Your stats will be kept though.
• Third for those playing Complete Edition Remastered the names of battlefields are using the old translation (Hu Lao Gate) not the up to date translation like in-game (Hulao Gate), all of these are in the Original Mode for that version.

Character Unlocking/Musou Mode/4th Weapons

This will detail how to unlock all 41 characters for use in Free Mode, while also detailing the Musou Mode for characters of the Shu, Wei & Wu kingdoms and how to get all characters 4th weapon. For 4th weapons the following apply.

• The difficulty must be set to Hard.
• In cases where sub officers are involved if you defeat the main officer, but still manage to defeat the sub officer who is nearby before they retreat it will still meet the requirement.
• If using 2 players as long as one player meets the requirements the weapon will appear.
• The weapon can have either no element or one of the following below.
• Unlike later games only specific attacks with the 4th weapon will have elemental activation.

4th weapons can come with one of the following three elements attached to them

• Fire - Gradually burn the target's life.
• Lightning - Impact with the ground causes a shock wave hitting nearby enemies, can potentially cause another shock wave.
• Steel (Death) - One shot normal peons, deal percentage damage to officers.

Shu

Zhao Yun

• Unlock: Initial unlock.
• Musou: The Battle of Chang Ban, The Battle at Chi Bi, Assault on Cheng Du, The Battle of Mt. Ding Jun, The Battle at Yi Ling, The Nanman Campaign, The Battle at Wu Zhang Plains.
• Element: AAAAB & AAAAAB(*B) (very last hit)
• Supply Unit: Western Gate Captain by Zhang He's starting location that makes its way to the Northeast before leaving, they will double back when Liu Qi appears.
• 4th Weapon: The Battle of Chang Ban (Liu Bei's Forces) - Defeat Xiahou Dun, Zhang Liao & Zhang He and active the Defend Liu Bei event.
  • The Defend Liu Bei event has a limited time frame in which it can be activated, it starts from when Cao Cao's main forces arrive up until Liu Bei meets with Liu Qi at the shore. You simply need to be riding a horse in Liu Bei's vicinity (mounting one near him counts) for the event. Due to where the Supply Unit appears it is recommend to defeat Zhang He after the event not before.

Guan Yu

• Unlock: Initial unlock.
• Musou: The Yellow Turban Rebellion, The Battle at Hu Lao Gate, Guan Yu's Escape, The Battle of Chang Ban, The Battle at Fan Castle, The Battle at Yi Ling, The Battle at Wu Zhang Plains.
• 4th Weapon: Guan Yu's Escape (Guan Yu's Forces) - Clear the 4th gate.
• Element: AAAABB
• Supply Unit: By the 5th gate that makes its way to the South to the 4th gate before leaving.

Zhang Fei

• Unlock: Initial unlock.
• Musou: The Battle at Hu Lao Gate, The Battle of Chang Ban, The Battle at Chi Bi, Assault on Cheng Du, The Battle at Yi Ling, Raid on the Rouge Fortress, The Nanman Campaign.
• 4th Weapon: The Battle of Chang Ban (Liu Bei's Forces) - Defeat Xiahou Dun & Xiahou Yuan and activate Zhang Fei's Bridge Yell event.
  • The Bridge Yell event is really the only tough part for this 4th weapon as you will need to be on the bridge on the East side of the map to activate the event. At the start defeat Zhang Liao and Xiahou Dun to give the center some breathing space, then take one of their horses and ride up to Xiahou Yuan and defeat him, if you were quick enough Cao Cao's main force should arrive after you beat Yuan which would happen 5 minutes into the stage. Make your way back to the bridge on the East and wait for Zhang Fei's Bridge Yell event. Do not kill the Gate Captains in the Northeast area otherwise it will be very hard to get the Bridge Yell event to occur.
• Supply Unit: Left Gate captain near Xu Zhu's starting position that will make its way North before leaving.

Zhuge Liang

• Unlock: Complete Musou Mode with any Shu or Wei officer except Zhang Fei, Pang Tong, Dian Wei, Zhang Liao & Zhen Ji who do not have Wu Zhang Plains in their Musou Mode.
• Musou: The Mountain Bandit Campaign, The Battle of Chang Ban, The Battle at Chi Bi, The Battle at Yi Ling, The Nanman Campaign, The Battle of Jie Ting, The Battle at Wu Zhang Plains.
• 4th Weapon: The Battle at Wu Zhang Plains (Shu Forces) - Defeat Cao Xiu.
  • Cao Xiu appears as reinforcements after Sun Li has been defeated or 13 minutes have passed.
• Element: AAAAB
• Precious Item: East of Shu's Main Camp.

Liu Bei

• Unlock: Complete 2 Shu Musou Modes.
• Musou: The Yellow Turban Rebellion, The Battle at Hu Lao Gate, The Battle of Chang Ban, The Battle at Chi Bi, Assault on Cheng Du, The Battle of Mt. Ding Jun, The Battle at Yi Ling, The Nanman Campaign, The Battle at Jie Ting, The Battle at Wu Zhang Plains.
• 4th Weapon: The Battle at Yi Ling (Shu Forces) - Defeat Sun Shang Xiang.
  • This is one of the hardest weapons to get solo since things can go bad very fast in Shu's version of Yi Ling. If you can defeat Lu Meng before Lu Xun orders Zhu Ran to burn the Shu camp and prevent the fire attack you will not have to worry about facing the entire Wu army by yourself.
• Precious Item: West of the lower Gate Captain by Sun Quan.

Ma Chao

• Unlock: Complete 1 Shu Musou Mode, alternatively have a Dynasty Warriors 2 save.
• Musou: The Battle of Chang Ban, The Battle at Chi Bi, The Mountain Bandit Campaign, The Battle at Tong Gate, The Battle at Yi Ling, The Nanman Campaign, The Battle at Wu Zhang Plains.
• 4th Weapon: The Battle at Tong Gate (Allied Forces) - Have Han Sui defect to Cao Cao's side.
  • Make your way to Cao Cao when you get the chance to trigger an event which should cause Cao Cao to travel West to the Northwestern section of the map after Xu Huang's unit arrives. Ma Chao will ask Han Sui, Yang Qiu & Li Kan to help which will cause them to go North, stay by Han Sui until he meets Cao Cao. Afterward an event should trigger of a soldier telling Ma Chao about Han Sui meeting Cao Cao, then wait for Han Sui to defect. Do not defeat all 3 officers in front of Tong Gate (Xiahou Yuan, Cao Ren & Cao Hong) because if Pang De or Ma Dai attack Cao Cao he won't move to the West, also the Supply Unit will not appear immediately so you will have to wait for it.

• Supply Unit: South of the Northern Bridge that makes its way to the Northeast before leaving.

Huang Zhong

• Unlock: Complete 2 Shu Musou Modes.
• Musou: The Yellow Turban Rebellion, The Battle at Hu Lao Gate, The Battle of Chang Ban, Assault on Cheng Du, The Battle of Mt. Ding Jun, The Battle at Yi Ling, The Battle at Wu Zhang Plains.
• 4th Weapon: The Battle of Mt. Ding Jun (Shu Forces) - Defeat Xiahou Shang.
• Precious Item: West of the Northern Gate Captain.

Jiang Wei

• Unlock Complete Musou Mode with Zhuge Liang.

Cao Cao

• Unlock: Complete 2 Wei Musou Modes.

  • It is recommended to defeat Zhang Liang last since the Supply Unit appears closer to his side.

Xiahou Yuan

• 4th Weapon: The Battle of Mt. Ding Jun (Wei Forces) - Defeat Huang Zhong after his charging event.
  • Huang Zhong has 2 events that need to happen for you to get this weapon, the first being when he shoots an arrow and the second being him charging forward on horseback. If you are playing with events off wait until his morale increases twice.

• Precious Item: Northwest corner from where Huang Zhong starts.

Zhang Liao

• Unlock: Stage: The Battle at He Fei (Wu Forces) - Defeat him. Must be done in Musou Mode.
• Musou: The Battle at Hu Lao Gate, The Battle of Chang Ban, The Battle at Chi Bi, The Mountain Bandit Campaign, The Battle at Tong Gate, The Battle at He Fei, The Siege of He Fei Castle.
• 4th Weapon: The Battle at He Fei (Wei Forces) - Defeat Zhou Tai.
• Precious Item: North of the Broken Bridge.

Sima Yi

• Unlock: Complete Musou Mode with any Shu or Wei officer except Zhang Fei, Pang Tong, Dian Wei, Zhang Liao & Zhen Ji who do not have Wu Zhang Plains in their Musou Mode.
• Musou: The Battle at Guan Du, The Battle at Chang Ban, The Battle at Chi Bi, The Battle at Fan Castle, The Battle at Jie Ting, The Siege of He Fei Castle, The Battle at Wu Zhang Plains.
• 4th Weapon: The Battle at Wu Zhang Plains (Wei Forces) - Defeat Zhang Bao within 20 minutes, a supply unit will appear near the enemy Gate Captains on the bottom right when 20 minutes have passed, defeat it.
  • You can spend extra time killing off enemy officers while you wait for the supply unit to appear, they don't have the weapon, but will trigger the message for it.

Xu Huang

• Unlock: Complete 2 Wei Musou Modes.

  • Defeat Wei Yan to keep Lu Meng alive and you shouldn't need to worry afterward, though if you help Zhu Ran get his Fire Attack off this becomes a cake walk to get. You can cheat clearing the Stone Warrior Formation by entering the Northern portion and going around to the Western portion.

Taishi Ci

• Unlock: Stage: Assault on Wu Territory (Sun Ce's Forces) - Defeat Liu Yong before Yan Bai Hu & Wang Lang to make Taishi Ci surrender and join you. Must be done in Musou Mode.

Sun Quan

• Unlock: The Battle at He Fei (Wu Forces) - Cause Cao Cao to retreat by having Sun Quan/Jian enter his camp. Must be done in Musou Mode.
  • Wait for Taishi Ci's death event which will cause Sun Quan/Jian to fall back to the broken bridge. Meet with him to have him jump over then wait for Zhang Liao to leave the battlefield and reappear near him and save him. Afterward Quan/Jian will declare a counterattack, make sure he makes Cao Cao retreat by entering his camp to unlock Sun Quan.
• Musou: The Battle at Chi Bi, Raid on the Rogue Fortress, The Battle at He Fei, The Battle at Yi Ling, The Battle at You Ting, The Nanman Campaign, The Siege of He Fei Castle.
• 4th Weapon: The Siege of He Fei Castle (Wu Forces) - Defeat Zhang He.

Lu Meng

  • He doesn't have to show up during the battle.

Gan Ning

Dong Zhuo

• Unlock: The Battle at Hu Lao Gate (Allied Forces) - Defeat Diao Chan & Lu Bu.
• 4th Weapon: The Battle at Hu Lao Gate (Dong Zhuo's Forces) - Wait for Diao Chan to defect to the Allied side and defeat her.
  • For Diao Chan to defect the only officers that must be alive are her and Lu Bu, stay by her until every other officer is defeated then defeat her when she defects.

• Precious Item: Gate Captain North of Hua Xiong's starting location.

Yuan Shao

• Unlock: Battle at Guan Du (Cao Cao's Forces) - Defeat Yan Liang and Wen Chou before Guan Yu does.
• 4th Weapon: The Battle at Guan Du (Yuan Shao's Forces) - Keep Wen Chou alive for 10 minutes.
  • Keeping Wen Chou alive is pretty easy, you will want to defeat Guan Yu first as if he meets Wen Chou he will instantly kill him. Afterward if you defeat Xiahou Dun & Xu Huang he should have no trouble staying alive.
• Supply Unit: North of the Southern fort that makes its way to the Southeast Gate Captain before leaving.

Zhang Jiao

• Unlock: The Yellow Turban Rebellion (Han Forces) - Defeat Zhang Bao, Zhang Liang & Zhang Jiao.
• 4th Weapon: The Yellow Turban Rebellion (Yellow Turbans) - Defeat Liu Bei, Sun Jian or Cao Cao including all of their sub officers.
  • You simply need to choose between the three officers and defeat all of their sub officers before them.
• Element: AAAAB
• Precious Item: Right of the river leaving the North of the Castle.

Meng Huo

• Unlock: The Nanman Campaign (Wu or Shu Forces) - Defeat him at all 7 of his locations. Must be done in Musou Mode.
• 4th Weapon: The Nanman Campaign (Nanman Forces) - Defeat Ma Chao, Zhang Yi and Ma Dai or defeat Zhang Fei, Zhang Bao, and Guan Xing.
  • You simply need to choose between either the left or right side of the map to defend.
• Element: AAAAAB
• Precious Item: Near the Gate Captain on the left in the center of the map.

Zhu Rong

• Unlock: The Nanman Campaign (Wu or Shu Forces) - Defeat her.
• 4th Weapon: The Nanman Campaign (Nanman Forces) - Keep Dong Tu Ne & Ahui Nan alive for 15 minutes.
  • You won't have to worry about Dong Tu Ne as no one will likely go for him, you will want to rush to help Ahui Nan though.
• Element: AAAB & AAAAB
• Precious Item: Near the Southern bridge.

Fu Xi

• Unlock: Clear Musou Mode with Liu Bei, Cao Cao & Sun Jian.
• 4th Weapon: Surprise Attack on Liu Biao (Liu Biao's Forces) - Defeat Huang Gai.
• Element: AAAAB & AAAAAB(*B) (very last hit)
• Precious Item: Dead end at the Northwest of the Beach.

Nu Wa

• Unlock: Clear Musou Mode with all 4 female characters (Sun Shang Xiang, Da Qiao, Xiao Qiao & Zhen Ji).
• 4th Weapon: The Battle at Wan Castle (Zhang Xiu's Forces) - Defeat Dian Wei.
• Element: AAAAAB(*B) (very last hit)

Dim Sum & Musou Wine Locations

All stages have a Dim Sum which increases max Health by 10 and a Musou Wine which increases max Musou by 10 somewhere in the stage, the only exception is Yellow Turban Rebellion which has 2 of each in the stage. They are found in pots.

These are items with specific effects that only need to be obtained once, their border is Red compared to the Blue of the above items. The items are listed in order of how they appear when selecting items to use for battle. For those playing Xtreme Legends with mixjoy you can't get these items if you play on Novice difficulty.

Red Hare Saddle

• Effect: Begin stage mounted on Red Hare (fastest horse)
• Stage: The Battle at Hu Lao Gate (Allied Forces)
• Requirement: Defeat Lu Bu.
• Supply Unit: Northwest of Fan Shui Gate that makes its way to the Gate Captain at the North, will wait awhile when it reaches before leaving.

Hex Mark Saddle

• Effect: Begin stage mounted on Hex Mark (second fastest horse)
• Stage: Assault on Cheng Du (Liu Bei's Forces)
• Requirement: Defeat all officers except Liu Zhang.
• Precious Item: Southwest corner of the map.

Imperial Saddle

• Effect: Can mount all horses (will no longer be bucked off a horse at low ranks)
• Stage: The Battle at Yi Ling (Shu Forces)
• Requirement: Prevent Zhu Ran's fire attack and defeat all generals except Sun Quan/Jian. It is recommended to defeat Lu Xun last as he is closest to the Supply Units appearance.
• Supply Unit: Gate Captain North of Sun Quan/Jian's location that circles clockwise from Gate Captain on the East side before leaving when it reaches the East again.

The Art of War

• Effect: Imperial Seal, War God's Axe & Armor have longer effect (Attack/Defense x2 will be 60 seconds, Musou Full for 20 seconds)
• Stage: The Siege of He Fei Castle (Wei Forces)
• Requirement: Defeat all officers except Sun Quan/Jian, then wait awhile for the item pop up.
• Precious Item: North of Sun Quan/Jian's starting location on the horizontal boat.

Bodyguard Manual

• Effect: Bodyguards become stronger (makes them more aggressive)
• Stage: The Siege of He Fei Castle (Wu Forces)
• Requirement: Defeat Xu Zhu.
• Precious Item: From where Xu Zhu is continue North then go West and take the Northern path to find the crate.

The Way of Musou

• Effect: Can use True Musou Attack regardless of health (Musou will deal fire damage with an extended finisher)
• Stage: Guan Yu's Escape (Guan Yu's Forces)
• Requirement: Defeat Xiahou Dun to get the item.

Survival Guide

• Effect: Attack x2 when near death (standing up when health bar is red gives Attack x2 for 30 seconds)
• Stage: The Battle of Wu Zhang Plains (Shu Forces)
• Requirement: Wait for 2 of the Tiger generals (Guan Yu, Huang Zhong, Ma Chao, Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun) to die to trigger the falling star event.
• Precious Item: North of the entrance to Shu's main camp.

Defender

• Effect: Defense x2 when near death (standing up when health bar is red gives Defense x2 for 30 seconds)
• Stage: The Battle at Wu Zhang Plains (Wei Forces)
• Requirement: Wait for 2 playable officers (Xu Huang, Xu Zhu, Zhang He and Zhen Ji) to die to trigger the falling star event.
• Precious Item: Northeast corner of the map.

Fire Arrows

• Effect: Can shoot fire arrows (burn targets dealing slightly more damage)
• Stage: The Battle at Chi Bi (Cao Cao's Forces)
• Requirement: Defeat Zhou Yu before the fire attack.
• Precious Item: Center most boat, Huang Gai goes here for the Fire attack.

Buckler

• Effect: Prevents stumbling after guarding (will never be Guard Broken)
• Stage: The Battle at He Fei (Wu Forces)
• Requirement: Wait for Taishi Ci's death event which will cause Sun Quan/Jian to fall back to the broken bridge, meet them there and they will jump over. Zhang Liao will eventually leave the battlefield and return by Quan/Jian's spot, defeat Zhang Liao to get the item.

Power Scroll

• Effect: Never lose weapon deadlocks (loss changes to draw)
• Stage: The Battle of He Fei (Wei Forces)
• Requirement: Trigger Gan Ning's surprise attack event and defeat him to get the item.

Gold Harness

• Effect: Prevents dismounting when hit by arrows (stay on mount when hit by arrows, damage not reduced)
• Stage: The Battle at Tong Gate (Cao Cao's Forces)
• Requirement: Defeat Pang De & Ma Dai, then defeat everyone except Ma Chao & Han Sui so that Cao Cao can meet with Han Sui. When Han Sui defects wait for Ma Chao to retreat back to Tong Gate and follow him, it is recommended to play on Normal or higher so Han Sui doesn't get defeated by your forces too quickly.
• Supply Unit: Gate Captains of the Southwest that makes its way to the Northwest corner of the map and leaves.

Item Farming

The best stage to play to get the most items is The Battle at You Ting - Wu Forces on Hard. This version gives you 6 item bags to collect compared to Wei's version giving only 4 in different spots. For Wu's version the 6 items bags are.

1. Crate at the Southwest corner of the left center path.
2. Hu Zhi (East path by Da Qiao)
3. Crate South of the center fort
4. Man Chong (Southeast of the center fort)
5. Cao Xiu
6. Crate near Gate Captain behind Sima Yi

If you are wanting to max out all items you will want a general you are good with provided they have Luck on their 4th weapon (Gan Ning is a good candidate for quick clearing) with Seven Star Orb as one of their items. Quit and save before you start picking up items as bags picked up before saving will already have the contents determined when you beat the stage. If you don't get an upgrade to your items press Start+Select, reload the save and try again, this will require patience specially for Wind Scroll & Elixir as they are pretty rare.

Cheat Codes

Dynasty Warriors 3 is one of few warriors titles to have cheat codes, all of these codes must be entered at the main menu and if successful you will hear a crowd cheering.
