The sixth main installment of the Soul series, which came with a rather good battle system, but poor movelist pool. The character creation aspect, which is the main reason I bought this game, is lacking in item variation. I can go on and on, but that's not the point of this page.
Part of this guide was previously published on Another Stage of History.
Legendary Souls Mode
The Legendary Souls mode is the only mode in this game which has no purpose whatsoever except bragging rights. All of the stuff you can unlock in this mode can be unlocked much easier by using player points. The AI in this mode reads your button input and dish out the fastest attack they can give, including abuse of just inputs and quickest inputs, to form a long combo in which there's almost no escape. There's no fun in it, no prize, nothing. Needless to say, it is highly recommended not to play this mode. Nothing will be gained except a remorse of having hours of life wasted.
Recommendation
Recommended character is Soul of Natsu; mainly because of her speed and strength. Try practice with her Main Move tutorial in Training mode to get a grip on how Natsu works. You will not need to be extremely good with Natsu, you only need to know her basic moves. If you are a range player who like to hit enemy using Nightmare's sword tip (like me), you can learn the ranges easier.
Using Natsu
Your main attack will be 6B+K BBB. Use this move from afar as doing this in close combat will most likely result in failure. The hypothetical optimal range is: 6B+K BBB after the third hit been blocked. During battle, taking a step back is a good move as opponent tend to run forward, shortening the distance. Only do this attack when opponent is standing and watch out for self-ringouts.
- Don't bother with fancy moves. Human reaction speed is no match for the AI's reaction to pull a counter.
- Her AA outspeeds most opponents in close combat except Edgemaster, which is the hardest problem in the mode, take note that only go to AAB if the first attack lands on a counter.
- An alternative attack to use when close is throw. While hard, try to go with 66B+K or a+gA+B+K. This is the only Brave Edge safe to use. When the opponent break throw, there's a big chance that throwing them again will work.
- While rising AAA seems to work well to get up after being downed.
- Do not give up, especially against Cervantes and Edgemaster. Remember that this game has a chance that AI go braindead, thus can be exploited.
The Opponents
Normally, the roster is a lineup of 7 opponents. I cannot confirm if Harada (Devil Jin) can appear in this mode; To be on the safe side, always defeat him first in Quick Battle Mode. He's a Rank A opponent. The regulars are:
- Kilik: He will always use Xiba's style. This makes him gain access to his personal 22AAA attack.
- Siegfried: He appears in his SC4 attire with SC4 Soul Calibur Complete. There's nothing special about the weapon, except appearance.
- Nightmare: He appears in his SC4 attire with SC4 Soul Edge Complete. There's nothing special about the weapon, except appearance.
- Cervantes: He appears in his SC5 2P outfit combined with flaming skull, similar to SC Inferno / SE Soul Edge. He tend to abuse his quickest input move, thus performing long, impossible combos. He is the second hardest opponent.
- Edge Master: He will always use Alpha Patroklos' style. He tend to abuse his just input move, thus performing long, impossible counter attacks. He is the hardest opponent.
- Elysium: She will always use Pyrrha Omega's style. This makes her have unique Critical edge, unique 236B, and unique taunt move. She tend to use her Critical Edge in combo or for downed/aerial combo, which makes it weaker.
- Algol: His special power is to positioning himself so well that the 6B+K BBB can result in self ring out if not careful. It seems that he will not do his Critical Edge unless he has 2 full bars.

Save Data Editing
As this is a save data editing, you're required to understand how to encrypt/decrypt your save data and manipulate it using hex editor (XVI32 preferred as hex editor).
Custom Character Data
So far I have found moveset, voice, weapon, and character strength. For less drama issue in online battle, the strength digit will not be disclosed. It's easy to find, and will cause disconnection after 1 online battle.
Each slot has two name address, the second address is not listed here due to their adjacent location. You can utilize the name address to break the limit of 12 letter. For safety, use same name for both address. The longest name I've tried is "Cliche Incarnate Richter" which is 24 characters and he is editable, usable in all modes, without breaking the name. The name will be truncated to 12 if I re-input his name during creation.
Voice data is pretty-self explanatory.

Each slot has two moveset address, each using same digit. They have different function:
- Moveset 1: Character's pose during creation (including photo), menu weapon name, sometimes entry pose, sometimes win pose, and character's identity. This also governs the mimic character behavior. If you set this to mimic character's identity, they will ignore the second moveset data and weapon.
- Moveset 2: Character's moveset, weapon set, and roster slot (Standard Edit). This affects taunt if used with either Kilik with Xiba's move or Elysium with Pyrrha Omega's move, but neither will gain special moveset nor special Critical Edge.
- Example: If you make a Siegfried custom, set Move 1 to
01and Move 2 to02, the game will recognize the character as Maxi, will call "Maxi" upon selection, will have maxi's weapon name on creation mode, but will appear under Voldo's roster slot, have Voldo's moveset and weapon, while have Maxi's pose during creation.

Finding the Custom Character Moveset Data
I found the data myself using an algorithm I built in Microsoft Office Excel. First I created 7 custom characters named Bohb1, Bohb2, Bohb3, Bohb4, Bohb5, Alice4, and Alice5. They are all just a copy of each other, no parameter changed, and their card blanked i.e. black background, maximum frame zoom, corner image). Blanking the card is essential to make the image as similar as possible, thus will not pollute the algorithm.
The moveset was configured as follows:
| Slot | Character | Moveset |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | (Blank slot) | N/A |
| 21 | Bohb1 | Mitsurugi |
| 22 | Bohb2 | Maxi |
| 23 | Bohb3 | Voldo |
| 24 | Bohb4 | Yoshimitsu |
| 25 | Bohb5 | Cervantes |
| 26 | Alice4 | Yoshimitsu |
| 27 | Alice5 | Cervantes |
| 28 | Ezio | Ezio |
| 29 | Algol | Algol |
Mitsurugi was chosen due to the digit pattern of previous Soul series that Mitsurugi always come first, followed by Maxi, then Voldo, then Yoshimitsu, then Cervantes.
This pattern allows the logic of Bohb1 to Bohb5 always have different digit, but Bohb4 and Bohb5 have same digit with Alice4 and Alice5, respectively. Let's state this as Logic 1.
From my previous attempted search for the digit (which failed), each character slot have 29832 address. Trying to cover that without any help is suicide. On this search, I also open to the chance that the character slot address does not begin at name address. I have to think of the possibility that part of Bohb2's address will be on the 29832 address that I designate as Bohb1's address. Thus I also list 29832 address before Bohb1, even though the slot was empty. Let's state this as Logic 2.
Using only half of Logic 1, I put the following code on Excel:
=IF(OR([@Bohb1]=[@Bohb2],[@Bohb2]=[@Bohb3],[@Bohb3]=[@Bohb4]),"Same Value!","")
Notice that Bohb 5 is not used on the algorithm because of Logic 2, thus Bohb5's moveset address could be in Bohb4's. This code compares Bohb1 to Bohb2, Bohb2 to Bohb3 and Bohb3 to Bohb4. If either of them are same, then the address are considered same, since by first moveset logic, neither Bohb can have save address.
From the initial 29832, the algorithm allowed me to filter the table to a much manageable 63 addresses. After just a bit of looking, I found that address 16603 and 20780 possibly contain the character digit since they correspond to Logic 1. But here's the catch. The digit for Mitsurugi (00) appears on the blank slot before Bohb1.
Which means my speculation of Logic 2 is proven. After editing both number, I succeeded in making my first Ezio Custom Character.
9th Weapon
You can only assign 9th weapon to a character using save game editor. The address is listed above. Female character's 9th weapon are all Soul Calibur. Siegfried and Nightmare both have their default SC4 weapon, no doubt for Legendary Souls mode. Other male characters are mostly a shinier version of their 1st weapon, most probably for cut scene prop. All of them cannot be colored, except the aura on Ein.

Costume DLC Buyer's Guide
There are numerous DLC Packs available for SC5, but unless you are a collector you are probably wondering which packs are worth it and which packs are not. This guide will cover all available DLC, focusing on equipment only.
The review and verdict are biased toward creation of original characters and the part's compatibility with other parts. Verdict legend is as follows:
- WORTH IT - definitely worth spending the money
- OPTIONAL - the pack contain item(s) that can be useful
- SKIP - only get it if you have extra money.
Even though you're not planning to obtain any Cepheus Set items, I recommend you to at least download the free compatibility pack. This would make you able to see your opponent's complete outfit at online battles.
Dark Knight & White Knight
This pack is available via the Collector's Edition or the PSN Soulcalibur V Legendary Edition. Unlike SC4's Limited Edition DLC, you cannot obtain this from other region DLC (SC4 LE pack is obtainable from regular EU PSN Store). The Dark Knight set is mainly single-colored, save for a few additional spots such as the tiny round crystal and glove color. Unless you want to make a knock-off Sauron from Lord of the Rings, you will find few use of the Dark Knight Set. On the other hand, the White Knight set is dual-colored (base and lining) and the set itself looks great, especially the Arms and Greaves.
VERDICT: WORTH IT
This pack contains equipments:
- Head: Dark Knight Helm, White Knight Helm
- Upper Body Covering: Dark Knight Plate, White Knight Plate
- Hip: Dark Knight Fauld, White Knight Fauld
- Arm: Dark Knight Arms, White Knight Arms
- Shoulder: Dark Knight Pauldrons, White Knight Pauldrons

These items do not behave like what you expect from an armor set. The Plate is an Upper Body item, making you unable to use Upper body covering item. The Greaves are a Lower Body item and comes with the fauld. The Gauntlets comes with the pauldrons. To mix these parts with other armor is hard, but the design is nice.

Cepheus Set 3
Miscellaneous Equipment 1 - $0.99, 80MSP
This pack contains special items, but they are far from being worthwhile. The Klonoa and Pac-Man "key chain" are actually as big as bag packs and cannot be recolored. The Shoulder Kitty is cute, but looks dead. Only the Strange Ward is interesting, but even that has no animation, so it is like a steel sheet. Almost all items can only be equipped at Special 1 slot.
VERDICT: SKIP

- Upper Body: Firefighter's Suit
- Lower Body: Firefighter's Pants, Overalls
Cepheus Set 4

VERDICT: OPTIONAL
This pack contains equipments:
- Hair: Crew Cut [Male], Mullet [Male], Ponytail [Female]

VERDICT: WORTH IT
This pack contains equipments:

Active Wear 2 - $1.99, 160MSP
This pack has the same deal as the previous Active Wear. They look fun to use, but quite worthless for the price. The Swimsuit (Name Tag) is the same Swimsuit, only with a chest name tag you cannot utilize. The big Championship Belt might be something you want if you going to make a Shocker Sentouin (LMGTFY Link).
VERDICT: SKIP
This pack contains equipments:
- Head: Padded Headgear
- Undergarments: Swimsuit (Name Tag) [Female]
- Upper Body: Tracksuit Jacket
- Lower Body: Boxing Trunks, Tracksuit Pants
- Hip: Championship Belt

Cepheus Set 5
Valkyrie Armor 1 - $2.99, 240MSP
This outfit would be great if it did not come with some ridiculous bits. The Cuirass is an Upper Body item, comes with a choker, and has uncolorable small white wings. The Fauld conflicts with almost all neck item, and have uncolorable white part. The Greaves have some uncolorable linings. The Helm clips with most hairstyle, which is weird since Siren Helm does not.
VERDICT: OPTIONAL
This pack contains female equipments:
- Head: Valkyrie Helm
- Upper Body: Valkyrie Cuirass
- Hip: Valkyrie Faulds
- Arm: Valkyrie Gauntlets
- Feet: Valkyrie Greaves
Sexy Costumes 1 - $2.99, 240MSP
I personally like this set because the Nurse's Boots have thick wedges and the Cowgirl Skirt is the only short tight skirt available, otherwise both Upper Body items are another conflict fest. The Nurse Boots comes with stocking and conflicts with ankle item. It would be nice if the Cowgirl Vest have a separate undergarment too.
VERDICT: WORTH IT
This pack contains female equipments:
- Head: Nurse's Cap, Ten Gallon Hat
- Upper Body: Cowgirl Vest, Nurse's Uniform
- Lower Body: Cowgirl Skirt
- Arm: Wrist Cuffs
- Feet: Cowgirl Boots, Nurse's Boots
Headgears 2 - $1.99, 160MSP
These headgears have even more limited use. The Fundoshi provided seems like something that is left out from Boy's Day Festival 1.
VERDICT: SKIP
This pack contains equipments:
- Head: Fighter Pilot Helmet, Rhinoceros Head
- Face: Noh Mask
- Undergarments: Fundoshi
- Special:Ornament Helmet Crest
Cepheus Set 6
Music Festival 1 - $0.99, 80MSP
The Powdered Wig is unusually a head item, well considering it is a wig that Gregorian/Victorian use, I think that makes sense. The Swallowtail Suit looks great at first glance, but it has weird bits. First of all it can make your character's hip look big. Second, it reduces bust size. Third, if you adjust your character's Chest size, rather than the bust that get bigger, your character's lower ribs get bigger instead, creating a deformed look. The suit can still work for male characters, though, but I think you want a unisex item to work for both gender.
VERDICT: SKIP
This pack contains equipments:
- Head: Powdered Wig
- Upper Body: Swallowtail Suit
Bridal Costumes 1 - $2.99, 240MSP
I personally consider this set worthy because of the Bridal Short, which is the only panties available to female character. The Tuxedo Jacket and Pants is nothing special. Tuxedo Shoes adds a decent shoe to male character. The Bridal Dress is beautiful, but it does not look good for character with big bust. The Tiara is another Special 1 item only.
VERDICT: WORTH IT
This pack contains equipments:
- Undergarments: Bridal Shorts [Female]
- Upper Body: Bridal Dress [Female], Tuxedo Jacket [Male]
- Lower Body: Tuxedo Pants [Male]
- Feet: Bridal Shoes [Female], Tuxedo Shoes [Male]
- Special 1: Tiara [Female]
Cepheus Set 7
Tekken Costumes 2 - $1.99, 160MSP
Contains Jun and Asuka's outfit. It is unfortunate that Asuka's Top is a fixed short top, outer jacket and hotpants. Jun's Top somehow has a property that makes breasts of any size look inflamed. Jun's Cape somehow conflicts with most of Upper Body item. There's not much use to these items.
VERDICT: SKIP
This pack contains female equipments:
- Upper Body: Top (ASUKA), Top (JUN)
- Lower Body: Pants (JUN)
- Neck and Back: Cape (JUN)
- Arm: Gloves (ASUKA)
- Feet: Boots (ASUKA), Sandals (JUN)
Sexy Costumes 2 - $2.99, 240MSP
This set is not as worthy as the Sexy Costumes 1. The Police Miniskirt is actually a top item and comes with the blazer and badge. The male Latex set is, without doubt, a tribute costume to Razor Ramon Hard Gay🔗.
VERDICT: SKIP
This pack contains equipments:
- Head: Police Cap [Female]
- Undergarments: Latex Hot Pants [Male]
- Upper Body: Latex Vest [Male], Police Miniskirt [Female]
- Neck and Back: Studded Collar [Male]
- Arm: Studded Armband [Male]
- Feet: Latex Short Boots [Male]
Classic Outfits 1 - $2.99, 240MSP
Expensive set, but I think is worthwhile because of the Bong-seon Underwear, Boots, as well as Kitty Sash and Choker. The only problem is the Kitty Sash is bulky compared to the SC4 counterpart, and Kitty Tunic is an underwear item.
VERDICT: WORTH IT
This pack contains female equipments:
- Undergarments: Bong-seon Underwear, Kitty Tunic
- Upper Body: Bong-seon Coat
- Lower Body: Kitty Sash
- Neck and Back: Kitty Choker
- Arm: Kitty Mittens
- Shoulder: Bong-seon Spaulder
- Feet: Bong-seon Boots, Kitty Sandals
Cepheus Set 8
Modern Costumes 3 - $1.99, 160MSP
Another Modern Costume "wonder". At least they are far better than the previous one. Denim set has detailed patterns, which is nice. Denim Jacket will make your character appear bigger in all dimension, which means, character with big bust would look really ridiculous. The Jeans clips with many feet item. The male version of Tennis Cap and Shoes are Mega man-sized. Worst of all, no Tennis Miniskirt, so these parts would add another T-Shirt and shorts primitive to your library.
VERDICT: SKIP
This pack contains equipments:
- Head: Tennis Cap
- Upper Body: Denim Jacket, Denim Vest, Tennis Jacket
- Lower Body: Jeans, Tennis Pants
- Feet: Tennis Shoes
Ancient Armor 2 - $1.99, 160MSP
These items look plain at best. The Corinthian helm will make you BALD. The Bronze Armor is an Upper Body item, which means a conflict fest with every Waist item. The Bronze Armbands are actually bandage and looks pretty badass. The Plume is another Special 1 only item. It's big and I personally use it to make horse hair for my Trojans.
VERDICT: SKIP
This pack contains equipments:
- Head: Corinthian Helm
- Upper Body: Bronze Armor
- Arm: Bronze Armbands
- Feet: Bronze Leg Armor
- Special 1: Legionnaire's Plume
School Uniforms 1 - $1.99, 160MSP
For such a relatively low price, this set contains several outfits that you can use to make Japanese-style school outfits. Male exclusive items are Banchou outfit, while female items are Sailor outfit. The Student slacks comes with a textured belt which lacks details. The Sailor Shirt is superior than its SC4 counterpart - it is fluid and behave like a garment. The only minor problem it has is that it clips with non-standard underwear such as the Bikinis. The Blazer looks good too, but Girl's blazer somehow lowers the breast line. The Duffel Bag is almost pointless, unless you want to make a hiker or something.
VERDICT: OPTIONAL
This pack contains equipments:
- Head: Student's Cap [Male]
- Upper Body: Boy's Blazer [Male], Girl's Blazer [Female], Sailor Shirt [Female], Student's Coat [Male]
- Lower Body: Student's Slacks [Male]
- Feet: Leather Loafers [Female]
- Special: Duffel Bag
Dark Warrior Armor 1 - $2.99, 240MSP
I think this set is intended to be a counterpart for female-only Valkyrie Armor. However, this set has major problems. First of all, the Cuirass is an Upper Body item, so you know the drill: conflict fest. The Gauntlets cannot be used with any shoulder item. Furthermore, the Faulds conflicts with EVERY, yes, EVERY Upper Body Covering items. This means you can only use this set as a whole. On the plus side, the set looks great and is heavily detailed. Get if you like the whole design. Otherwise, don't bother.
VERDICT: SKIP
This pack contains male equipments:
- Head: Dark Warrior Helm
- Upper Body: Dark Warrior Cuirass
- Hip: Dark Warrior Faulds
- Arm: Dark Warrior Gauntlets
- Feet: Dark Warrior Greaves
